5 stars My favorite Symphony X album. Hands down.

I love the classical-esque intro to the opening track, Smoke and Mirrors. The trading off solos between the guitar and the keyboard are also quite amazing. The next track, Church of the Machine, takes about 50 seconds too long to make its point, but it otherwise an excellent song. The next song, Sonata, is the only song on this CD I absolutely HATE. Its just a classical song based off something Beethoven wrote. I like Beethoven...but this song just sticks out like a sore thumb. It sounds ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like anything else, no drums, no bass, just keyboards and synths. that song kinda segues into In the Dragon's Den, which is probably the heaviest song on the album. Awesome guitar riffs and a powerful chorus.

However, Through the Looking Glass, the next track, is my all-time favorite Symphony X song. This epic is 13 minutes long and is divided into three parts, and while it is based off the same guitar riff, it manages not to get boring, because of key changes and the inserting of major/minor/diminished changes in the melody. A VERY interesting song and is certainly a classic. The Relic comes next, and is also very good. It begins with an interesting keyboard melody and the guitar soon follows. Orion the Hunter is alright, the chorus kinda annoys me, but I'm picky. A great song. The album closes with Lady of the Snow, which is an amazingly beautiful song. I think it's way better than Candlelight Fantasia on Divine Wings of Tragedy, because it doesn't get as annoying and isn't as repetitive. I love the chord the choir sings about 1:20 into the song on "Captured!" That is the most "Queen" moment on the entire album.

Final verdict? An amazing album and easily the most progressive of Symphony X's releases so far. My other favorite albums are Divine Wings of Tragedy and Damnation Game. Everybody seems to like The New Mythology Suite, but I absolutely HATE it. The debut is good too. I'd advise to stick with the band's first four CDs.
