![]() â??Headlossâ? is one of the many budget priced Caravan compilations which have been released in recent years. While some of the titles here will be familiar, since the songs originally appeared on the classic Caravan albums, these are not always the original versions. The tracks here are all taken from â??All over youâ?, â??The Battle of Hastingsâ?, â??Cool Waterâ?, and the live â??Canterbury comes to Londonâ?. This compilation is made up primarily of shorter tracks, the exception being the lengthy live version of â??Nine feet undergroundâ?. The result is rather a hotchpotch of relatively recent tracks (â??Donâ??t want loveâ?, â??This timeâ?), older tracks which lay unreleased for a number of years (Cool waterâ?, â??To the land of my fathersâ?), studio re-recordings of classic Caravan numbers (â??If I could do it all over..â?, Golf girlâ?, etc.), and vintage live recordings (â??Headlossâ?, â??Nine feet..â?). The overall atmosphere of the compilation, live recordings aside, is therefore pop orientated, at times whimsical. While the two live tracks give the album a commendable nod to the true Canterbury prog for which Caravan are revered in these parts, the limitations imposed by sourcing the material from their time with one label (HTD) makes this album largely dispensable for Caravan fans. There are several other similar compilations drawing their tracks from the same albums. On the other hand, this album tends to be widely available in the UK at a very cheap price (I have seen it new for 3 pounds). For those wishing to dip their toes in the (cool) waters of Caravan for the first time, there is enough here to make it worth your while.
