DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT: DECONSTRUCTION

Having listened to this album plenty of times, I still can't believe that this man created this original, unnatural and bizarre masterpiece while being sober (which he is now)! It never stops, being in constant motion all the time, and being 70+ minutes long, it takes quite a while to get over the headaches and really start to realize and appreciate the melodies hidden in all the yelling and wackiness. But it surely pays off! The album starts with Praise the Lowered, which may lure you into a trap, since it starts very calm and melodious. But the album shows its true face right at the half of it, completely catching you off guard, and it doesn't stop from there! It is absurdly heavy, containing multiple layers and textures that will take you several listens to notice, and that's what makes it so great and engaging. This is exactly the kind of album that I enjoy the most, since it gives me many, many listens before I get tired of it, for its sheer complexity and originality! You can really tell that Devin put a lot of work into this one, with several guest appearances from some of the greatest metal and rock musicians and also the use of an orchestra throughout the whole album. For me, this is truly his finest work, where everything fits together while, by paradox, not making any sense. Just don't take it that seriously, and you will have a great time with this one! 4 Stars from me!
