DIMENSION HATROSS

Fourth album from the Canadian post-chaos prog/thrash band (do you like this definition?) which took the direction of its predecessor, but it has more progressive elements. "Dimension Hatross" offers more creativity and innovation than "Killing Technology" and they managed to keep the complex and dissonant song structures. The heavily distorted bassguitar sound also raises the cold industrial space feeling and vocalist Snake did a real great job; the melodies are much better not just pure screaming. This pre- industrial metal album was (and is still) too heavy and complex for many listeners in the eighties and far ahead of its time.

Real highlight is the tribal drum intro for 'Tribal Convictions' (nomen est omen), the dissonant but very catchy guitarwork on 'Chaosmongers' and the fast and groovy 'Technocratic Manipulators'. The music of Voivod is definitely not for everyone, but it's worth the money and recommended for every prog metal fan. Prog metal does not consist of Dream Theater and its followers only, the genre is much more wide and diverse. The rating on metal-archives would be a 5 star.
