FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION

While many will find this album primarily of historical interest, it nonetheless has some pretty nice moments. Perhaps its biggest weakness is the incredibly overambitious concept ('the history of the world, from Genesis to Revelation'). They would probably have done better to have released a collection of unrelated songs, as evidenced by the fact that the other major release of material from this period, Disc 4 of the Genesis Archives (Vol. 1), actually holds up a bit better. The magic of the band at this point is really in Gabriel's voice, which makes it rise above the simple pop medium in which the band is playing to be something special. Songs like 'The Serpent' and 'Am I Very Wrong?' show hints of the band's potential, and 'One Day' serves as a fairly powerful love song, similar to something the Moody Blues's Justin Hayward might have penned.
