HOMEWORKS VOL. 4 - 2005-2007

Here's another from French multi-instrumentalist and prolific recording artist Sébastien Gramond's compilation series. From a man who releases several albums a year on average, having some sort of compilation to introduce new listeners is certainly recommendable, especially considering most people do not have the time to listen to dozens of albums in one stretch. Covering three years of Sébastien Gramond's work, 'Volume 4' of his 'Homeworks' series provides the listener with a sampling of eleven tracks, taken from several different albums of the time. Although I cannot say how effective this would be as a first impression to Gramond's work (being fairly experienced in his music by this point), the album has a collection of fairly decent songs that I reckon will reel a few new prospective listeners in.

The music here shows Gramond as a well-versed jazz fusion musician, although the occasional homage to hard rock and 60's psychedelia plays a role here too. I personally do not find this fourth installment in the compilation series to be as particularly effective as the past ones I have heard, but one can certainly hear the talent at work. Especially in the last jazz track 'What Would Lucas Think About It?', Sébastien Gramond makes himself out to be a very skilled instrumentalist, playing each instrument with prowess. Although it is clear that these years were not big on his personal development as an artist, I find that his skill in playing only improves as the years go by.

It was somewhat disappointing to hear this segment of Gramond's career and not see much of a change in style from what he was doing a few years before this. For someone looking for upbeat jazz fusion and looking for a new artist to discover though, Sébastien Gramond and his 'Homeworks Vol. 4' might be a good place to start.
