4 stars Surprised to see zero reviews as of 2024 for one of the better releases by one of the better post-rock bands ;-). I tend to be cautious about post-rock output just like I'm selective when it comes to metal. A lot of music tend to be repetitive and is more about feeling than musicianship. I've listened to the entire discography by "God is an astronaut" and was amazed to see them live in 2018 which was after their released arguably their darkest record, "Epitaph" which clicked with me quickly. Music on this album (and some titles) have ominous feeling with good guitar crescendos and spaces. Don't expect compositions to be very memorable but I feel they are better than most of their previous output which was sometimes monotonous. My two favourites are the ambient, piano-supported but serious "Winter dusk" and the poignant sublime"Medea". Medea is a dark post-rock masterpiece, having the first introspective part with background distorted guitar noodling which raises into powerful moaning in the second half. "Epitaph", the title song, will no doubt be the favourite of many, reminiscent of Mogwai's contrasts and accompanied by a mortal video. "Seance room" is another strong and loud number. Excellent addition to any post-rock collection (though not the best-of post-rock).
