4 stars The album that made me return to My Dying Bride again.

I am a big fan of their first albums. I am not a fan of those albums where My Dying Bride got lost and tried to be something they are not. But this album is their comeback album as far as I am concerned.

The album title is pretty describing for what we get here. A lot of songs of darkness. Pastorial darkness like for example what Genesis did on Trespass. But not the same type of music. But a large part of this album is downtuned gloomy progressive rock. Mostly driven by some droning vocals, bass and some sparse guitars. Other songs are pretty harsh again. Some are downright sinister hateful. The final song A Doomed Lover for example. Then again, you will also find a lot of beauty on this album. In short, this album displays every facets of a troubled soul. Hence the title.

Quality wise, this album is perhaps My Dying Bride's best album. It has some excellent songs like the above mentioned A Doomed Lover, The Wreckage of My Flesh and Catherine Blake. But there is not a single weak song here. The album is great throughout. It is also a pretty dense album with none breathing spaces inbetween. I regard this album as one symphony and not an album with songs. Hence, this album will really appeal to those into symphonic prog, although some may find the frequent use death grunts disagreeable. This is a very strong four star album in my view, just denied essential status by a cat's whiskers.
