VOLUME TWO

This album scares me. I do not like the fact that this LP has a similar structure like The Soft Machine's debut (a string of short songs in a short album). I'm not going to talk about every little song on this album, just because they're all so short, but I will discuss both sides individually. The album starts off pretty hard-rock-ish. The lyrics are the English alphabet for some reason. The melody goes through a series of transitions until lyrics return. They end quite swiftly and a return to instrumentation occurs. Then the lyrics are the English alphabet and the melody changes. There are more melody changes for quite a while until the side is over. Really makes use of the side title ('Rhythmic Melodies'). The side ends with a bang. Side two, 'Esther's Nose Job', is a billion times stronger than side one. Less super-short songs and more feeling and apparent meaning to each piece. This is what made me give this album a four-star rating instead of three. While not The Soft Machine's best, worth a shot. Prog on.
