BORIS & GLEB

The first track is glacially slow and shorn of any unneccessary refinements such as build-ups, break-downs, climaxes, fanfares and the rest of it. St Kraut remind me a little of Sand, Bohren & Der Club of Gore and perhaps German Oak. If you like hyper-repetitive grooves with the minimum of adornment. The bass forms the bedrock of the track, the drums keep a beat and an echo-laden and effects-ridden guitar does the rest. No keyboards, no vocals, no lyrics to distract us from the hypnotic pace. I can quite happily listen to the first track on 'repeat' for several hours.

Fruits De Mer have released the three St Kraut albums as a CDr triple pack for £12 (inc p&p), so it's not a huge investment. I think this first album may be the best of the three but haven't had a chance to listen in detail to the second two yet.

The band move into higher gear as the album progresses, but it's the first track I'll keep coming back to.
