BONGO FURY

Frank Zappa and Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) were very good friends since they were kids, it's no surprise that when they became musicians they used to perform together. Frank Zappa produced Beefheart's most well-known record "Trout mask replica" and Captain Beefheart sang in the only song with lyrics in Zappa's "Hot rats" ("Willie the Pimp"), but "Bongo fury" was their first whole album together. I've always been amused with Captain Beefheart and his voice that reminds me a lot of Howlin' Wolf; I like and respect his music but honestly, I'm not as a huge fan as I am of Zappa.

Such as most of the live albums of Frank Zappa, "Bongo Fury" is filled with original material that didn't appear in any of his studio albums before; the music in here is mainly Blues and Hard Rock but Beefheart's harmonica and Denny Walley's slide guitar give the album a very country style sometimes. Almost the entire album is under the masterpiece level but I have to make a special mention to the strong plate of the album: "Muffin Man" is absolutely fantastic; all the band was playing their hearts out but Zappa's guitar solo and Terry Bozzio's drums were completely on another level. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is my favorite song ever.
