![]() This collection, the better of the two, centers on Hendrix' compositional skills. The songs are not necessarily his most famous, but some of his most interesting, especially to us as prog fans. It is from here that we can feel the loss of his amazing talent at such an early age. Quite a stable of talent are on board. Carlos Santana, Brian May, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke and Steve Vai are among the big names mixed about here, all playing with lush orchestrations by Michael Kamen with the London Symphony Orchestra. Some of the highlights: John McLaughlin, Sting and Vinnie Colaiuta do a beautiful version of The Wind Cries Mary, and Paul Rodger and Steve Vai play a memorable Bold As Love. The low points: Toots Thielemans makes Little Wing sound like dentist office music, and the aforementioned Purple Haze with an insipid Bootsy Collins drum machine sequence, is extremely tired sounding. Even with those few flaws, this is a brilliant tribute to the late guitar master.
