First single "The Silent Sun" was released On February 22, 1968. Peter Gabriel had just turned eighteen, Tony, Michael and Chris were all seventeen while Anthony Phillips had just turned sixteen. so it's fair to be easy on them. This album was released in March 1969, so they were just a year older. Songs are not outstanding, but main problem is the technical side. It seems they used a four track machine, as drums, bass, guitars and keyboards are all bounced together, usually in the center, while Peter's voice, the bloody violins, the choir or other orchestral instruments (brass or a cor anglais) have their own tracks. The resulting sound is awful, rhythm track is a real mess, sometimes distorted, instruments are indistinguishable, and this even in 1969 is unacceptable. The other big con are string arrangements by Arthur Greenslade, a real pain in the arse, unbearable, haunting, a nightmare. I don't hear no Beatles in this album, I sense a lot of Bee Gees, specially in "Fireside Song".

Peter Gabriel: he's only eighteen but his voice is already incredible, wonderful, he is the big pro of the album.

Tony Banks: usually messed in the rhythm track, he makes no impression, hard to foresee what will come in the future.

Michael Rutherford: virtually unaudible in almost all the album, except for "In The Beginning", is victim of the poor mixing.

Anthony Philips: same thing as Tony Banks, hard to judge what he's playing, rarely pops out.

John Silver: the poor lad plays in eight tracks out of thirteen, he's drowned in the mix, and it's easy to understand the others don't really count on his drums.
