Even when it is considerably more interesting than "And then there were three", "Duke" has maybe even less of the classic Progressive Rock that GENESIS played in its early seventies' albums and it is even more oriented to Pop music; clearly, a lot of the songs that Phil COLLINS made as a solo artist have their roots in "Duke".

This record is filled mostly with short and catchy songs with very subtle and elegant instrumental passages but still, we can appreciate the great skills of all COLLINS, RUTHERFORD, and BANKS, so this is still a very good work of a band that was in the transition from one style to another one (another one that would be polished in later albums). Probably the eight-minute piece "Duke's travels" is the closest they got in this album to their previous recordings; very nice touch as a gift to the most devoted fans.

SONG RATING: Behind the lines, 4 Duchess, 5 Guide vocal, 3 Man of our times, 4 Misunderstanding, 3 Heathaze, 3 Turn it on again, 4 Alone tonight, 3 Cul-De-Sac, 4 Please don't ask, 3 Duke's travels, 5 Duke's end, 3

AVERAGE: 3.67

PERCENTAGE: 73.33

ALBUM RATING: 3 stars
