OLD PROG
3 stars The first compilation of Yes was released in 1975, in a moment in which the various members of the band wanted to make themselves known as soloists. "Yesterdays" opens with Simon & Garfynkel's "America" originally contained in the 1972 compilation / sampler "The New Age of Atlantic" and is the only song featuring Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman. Il resto è tutto composto da canzoni provenienti dai primi due album degli Yes ("Yes" and "Time And A Word") e, quindi con Peter Banks e Tony Kaye. It should be immediately said that the style is a sort of semi symphonic Proto Progressive but more tending to a Baroque POP which has little of Baroque. Generally the songs are very good if not excellent ("Time And A Word" and "Dear Father" above all). However, although there is a certain magic, there is no trace of that sound and those patterns that, from the third album onwards, will be typical of the "Yessound". Honestly, I have to admit that if we talk about Proto Progressive, other bands are more convincing and worthy of attention. However "Yesterdays" is a great way to get an idea of what Yes was on the first two albums. However "Yesterdays" isn't that it's so essential.
