4 stars QUEEN or the beginning of an era, it goes through the trilogy for the birth of a great group. 1. Keep Yourself Alive the recognizable intro riff, the drum kit kicking in, let's go for the 3 inseparable ones, the 3ers QUEEN; raw sound, it looks like THE WHO for the mixing, Brian shows his fingertips, Roger goes with a little drum solo fresh for the time and Brian puts back a layer of his future legendary bucolic guitar 2. Doing All Right intro piano, bass from John yes he was behind but very present, the stereo is adjusted, a country tune from Wales, it sounds like Mark Knopfler... ah yes that will be later; have the beginning of an opera with Freddie who goes there with his sensual voice; bam it suddenly explodes again this sound of WHO that I find, the choirs and we calm down, yes baroque was the digression; go the Memphis tune before the thunderous reprise; sometimes you have to delve into old and early albums, progressive gems before their time; the piano as a catalyst 3. Great King Rat and this intro which roars and dusts off the speakers, this baleful, burlesque galloping tune; rock I don't know, but glam rock, hard, dirty, innovative yes; a guitar solo that scratches your ears; a second part like a break, the group is looking for itself, wanting to find a typed sound that will recognize it from others; while waiting for this guitar arpeggio for the break and progressive consonances which slowly emerge; go solo...solo rising, the desire to show that you are good from the start go Roger tap tap 4. My Fairy King yes the intro, the intro, the intro, the madness, the piano, baroque, demonstrative, an operetta, a grandiloquent air before we knew what it meant; voices here and there, choirs there, ah, choirs and Freddie who goes there with his almost cheesy organ; bass maestro; it rises crescendo, go piano a few keys, go the voices and the flight... of creation I tell you; old, used but what ideas in this first draft! go Brian go set us on fire; I have the impression that each title is a nursery for upcoming sounds 5. Liar hard rock prog or not? hard rock, Brian tweaks his guitar, Freddie tries his hand at choreography, does not prevent 90 seconds of intro to release a hit that will come much later; the sound of hard of course, finally of the unrivaled QUEEN; liar you won't do better than me, liar, liar yes it's true; the break, the monster riff, the vocal battles... before their time, it's itchy, it's more experimental than accomplished ah this solo that's coming down, good old hard rock with Brian showing what his guitar can do ; It's a mess but what good is it? 6. The Night Comes Down for the variation from the intro, oriental, avant-garde and then the slow tempo for the dreamlike ballad, the aerial pad, the chorus chorus and the guitar which shows its signature here; a raw and warm 'Tommy' sound; after the intro we are treated to this wandering of struck, torn notes, to this disembodiing but oh so enjoyable musical journey 7. Modern Times Rock & Roll with Roger taking the vote, why not; a fast tune, almost punk rock, just kidding, but a tune that bursts and flirts with boogie, in short 8. Son & Daughter arrives, an ersatz LED ZEPPELIN no, I didn't say it... unstructured and serious air, like a bad boy; rock which is already distinguished by sounds belonging to the psyche, in the extravagance we guess the research, the desire to be the kings... the queens of the world 9. Jesus for the characteristic phrasing, the pamphlet title, the solemn title, the title with this bold solo, with this break like 'Sheer Heart Attack' before its time, premonitory even if certain notes came out of the title, yes it happens ; the airy, angelic final chorus 10. Seven Seas of Rhye which will be reprized; a punchy boogie-rock track with piano that goes well with it; live the bonus showing the soul of the group in gestation, ah it's good to get back to basics. Well, not to say a little regression doesn't hurt!
