In all fairness, this is a great metal album, teeming with buttkicking in-yer-face metal songs. I remember when it came out, I really liked it, especially songs like "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "My Friend in Misery", "The God that Failed", "Whereever I may Roam", "Sad but True" and even the melancholic love song "Nothing Elese Matters" - well, probably all of the songs on the album. They drew me and enthralled me like they did with millions of other people. Metallica had really struck gold here.

At the same time, I was also disappointed with the album. I was disappointed because it was softer then its predecessors, and more, so, because it was not as complex as its predecessors. And what I liked about Metallica whas their complexity and proggy tendencies, all of which are gone here (apart from, for instance, their conscious decision to reverse the soft-verse-and-hard-chorus of the typical power ballad into hard-verse-soft-chorus, which, while it had been done before by others, works brilliantly). But at least the rock/metal element remained.
