5 stars An ELP Classic!

Brain Salad Surgery marks questionably ELP's last accessible release and the begin of their slide as a band, at least for a time. These guys were furious musicians in their playing and stage antics. They are also some of the Prog masters, especially when one considers the pretentious element of Progressive Rock.

This album is chock full of Prog goodies, with the exception of Benny, which no doubt, was thrown in for a bit of not only comic relief, but an example of the band's proficiency in crossing genre lines. However, this album is incredibly important for one reason. Introduction to the Classic Rock world listener for years to come, to a Prog Rock staple. Karn Evil 9. This song is so well known on the radio that the average listener may not realize the song they listen to is much more than a circus-like tune, but insight into the magnificance of ELP's abilities.

My personal favorite on this album is Toccatta, mainly because it exhibits something I've loved to see over time, the incorporation of Classical music into Rock. Albert Ginastera's Piano Concerto #1 "Tocatta Concertata Presto" is the piece from which Emerson expands his imagination.

Of course, "Still...You Turn Me On", another venture into simplicity for the most part, from a band that can be anything but simple, does not fail to produce a great song that makes one want to hum along.

ELP has many albums that rank as must haves, and this is certainly one of them.
