MARBURG

The debut album of the 1971 German band Pell Mell has an interesting tone, and as general characteristic of the group, heavily incorporates Classical themes to their sound, mostly oriented by the Keyboards and the Violin, creating a very interesting sound that is notably a product of an assembly of very creative minds. With the addition of quick and fluctuating rhythms combined with erratic, high tone voices, they easily achieve a deep progressive and energetic feel that many bands struggle to acquire. They are marked by unusual and repetitive melodies that may shift a couple of times throughout the tracks, and are vaguely reminiscent of the spontaneous melodies of Gentle Giant, who also have strong Classical touch to their music.

One of the appreciable things about Pell Mell is the drumming, specifically in this album. The drum-line manages to support the precise tempo and mood that the melodic structure of the music would require. Although the melodies sometimes sound awkward and may change brusquely in some situations, they are well thought out and produce songs with very peculiar atmospheres.
