palasko
2 stars I love classical music as much as anybody, and I have a soft spot for Rachmanoff-esque piano riffs. However, I think this album marked the beginning of the end for the group.

In "Illusion" and "Turn of the Cards," it seems that band members were learning, with a fair amount of success, to integrate their sounds--including Annie Haslam and her voice.

However, instead of making progress in that direction, they took the different tones and overlaid them with gestures of classical music. From this album on, Renaissance would simply be a collection of notes and motifs.

Actually, I think that the most integrated sound came in some tracks of their eponymous first album. The melodies and riffs, for the most part, underscored Jane Relf's soaring voice. On the other hand, it often seemed that the Haslam ensemble members were trying to reach their own individual heights, and weren't necessarily flowing in the same direction-- much less to the tune of Haslam's voice.
