4 stars The crimson king of UK and Asia

This is an excellent DVD filmed in Poland with John Wetton performing live with his solo band. They play songs from Wetton's entire career including songs by King Crimson, UK and Asia. Some of these songs are given new and exciting arrangements and in some cases I think these performances outshine the original studio versions! This is, for example, true of two of the King Crimson cuts, Easy Money and Book of Saturday in my opinion.

In addition to some of the best songs from Wetton's solo career they also play such classics as Starless by King Crimson, In The Dead of Night by UK and Sole Survivor by Asia. The guitarist is none other than John Mitchell from Arena. Mitchell is very good and manages to interpret Robert Fripp, Steve Howe and Alan Holdsworth seamlessly and without imitating any of them. The keyboard player is Martin Orford from IQ and he also plays flute on some songs to great effect. The drummer is also excellent.

With so many classic songs, no Prog fan can go wrong with this DVD even if Wetton's vocals aren't perfect. You should also be aware that most of the songs by King Crimson and UK have not been played live by these bands in many, many years (not that I know of anyway); UK disbanded in the early 80's and King Crimson almost exclusively play their newer material. This fact makes this DVD a great source of this music.

There is also a interesting bonus feature with Wetton being interviewed by a Polish journalist. He talks about his life and his many career moves in and out of bands like Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, UK and Asia as well as about his brand new solo album. Sadly, the interview is badly filmed as opposed to the concert itself, which is in high quality both visually and sonically.

Amorata is highly recommended for any fan of progressive rock, old an new. It is absolutely essential for fans of John Wetton, UK, Wetton-era King Crimson and Wetton-era Asia.
