3 stars "Future Legends" is the debut full-length studio album by Northern Ireland, Belfast based progressive rock act Fruupp. The album was released through Dawn Records in October 1973. Fruupp formed in 1971 and released four full-length studio albums before disbanding in 1976 (citing poor album sales and a change in the musical climates as the reasons for their demise). They didnīt have much commercial success or international fame, but they were a relatively well known progressive rock act on the domestic British progressive rock scene and also in parts of mainland Europe, often supporting artists like Genesis and King Crimson.

The first 100 vinyl copies of the album featured 9 tracks and a total playing time of 47:26 minutes, but subsequent pressings omitted closing track "On a Clear Day" and cut over 7 minutes of playing time from the album. The 2009 remaster of the album restores the original tracklist and again includes "On a Clear Day".

Although often a bit heavier (an rooted in sloopier and noisier 60s blues rock) and dramatic in their use of symphonic elements, it is Genesis who Fruupp remind me of the most on this release. They have a similiar classical music sensibility and beautiful pastoral parts as well as their use of mellow and loud dynamics, which Genesis were also known for on their contemporary releases. Fruupp were a little too late to the game though, and in the fast moving progressive rock scene of the early 70s, this sounds more like an album released in 70/71 than a release from late 1973...and that meant something back then, as it still does today, when you evaluate the originality of a release like "Future Legends".

The point being that "Future Legends" isnīt the most unique sounding or original progressive rock release from the British Islands, but itīs still a good quality release, featuring a decent sounding production job, strong musicianship, and some adventurous and relatively memorable songwriting. Itīs definitely worth a listen if you enjoy the early 70s progressive rock scene and artits like Genesis, Greenslade, and early King Crimson. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
