4 stars Well, here we have Pain Of Salvation's first album, and it's really awesome, they started to reinvent Prog Metal by making something different, to what Prog Metal was.

This album maybe is one of PoS most experimental albums along with BE, less emotional than further releases, but that isn't a bad thing, because there are a lot of enjoyable melodies, and as a trademark of PoS, Daniel's voice is as awesome as ever, but in this album his singing had more a sarcastic touch that fits very well with songs like (!) Foreword, Winning a War, People Passing By or Stress.

The instrumental work is also good, we found influences like jazz and funk in some songs, and of course there is Metal and Prog Rock, still the guitar riffing give it a more Metal sounding, this doesn't sound like any typical Metal band, perfect for Prog Metal lovers, and even more open minded Prog Rock listeners. Also there is some technical playing, of course, that's a thing that is in the nature of Prog Metal, but those technical parts are also enjoyable, and not boring as bands like Dream Theater.

And well, like conclusion, I could really call Prog to this, but I'll be rating this with 4 of 5 stars, because of accessibility, it takes some time to really enjoy and appreciate this, so if you are a novice prog metal listener and you haven't listened to PoS, I recommend you to start to listen PoS with The Perfect Element or Remedy Lane, and if you have more experience listening to the genre, well this is a good album to listen to, it's really a good addition to prog music.
