4 stars Similarly to their debut album, In the Wake of Poseidon starts quietly before slamming into high gear with 'Pictures of a City', a little brother of Schizoid Man with equally intense fury and some nasty guitar playing by Fripp plus immense drumming by Michael Giles (sadly him and Greg Lake's last album with the group, and Ian McDonald had already left). Structurally, this album resembles Court on the first side since it then drops into a mellow ballad with 'Cadence and Cascade' (sung by Gordon Haskell) which is pleasant enough, and then going into the symphonic title track which is another epic mellotron based piece in the vein of 'Epitaph' again with some powerful drumming from Giles. A great tune really. The standout and most deviant track is 'The Devil's Triangle' (inspired by Holst's "Planets") - a nightmarish 11 minute mellotron driven bolero in three parts that grows darker and more demonic as it goes on, before dissolving into a very demented yet absurdly playful conclusion in 'Garden of Worm'.. A divisive track for some listeners, but I always loved it, and it transitions nicely into a peaceful conclusion with 'Peace - an End', ending the album on a much lighter note. A solid album overall, though similar to their debut the songs still sound fresh and interesting to me, and more focused than on Lizard or Islands. Highlights are 'Pictures of a City', title track, 'Devil's Triangle' !
