Lady In Black
4 stars HIGHWAY STAR... MY SPEED KING

Mybe this live alum is the best purple live with "Made In Japan". So because is a very complete live, with NK I and MK II songs. The first live (CD 1) is a great 1970 live (February 22, 1970 BBC studios) recorded in Mono. This is a great performance. If "Speed King" is a great song" and "Child In Time" is a great disturbing piece, "Wring That Neck" is a great instrumental by MK I the power of MK II in 1970 is all in "Mandrakeroot" with a great performance (on all the great screaming vocals of Gillan). So this is a great masterpiece. The second live (March 9, 1972 Paris Theater London), recorded in stereo, isn't good and isn't bad. This because is from the "Made In Japan" years and it's naturally the comparison with "Made In Japan". In every case "Highway star", "Strange Kind Of Woman", "Maybe I'm A Leo", "Space Truckin'", "Smoke On The Water" and "Lucille" are extreme great songs. "Lucille" (originally recorded by Little Richard) is the great surprise of this live because extreme transformed in a great Purple song. It's true, I prefer the 1970 live. But also the 1972 live is great. But 1970 live is more fresh and innovative. Progressive, Hard Rock or Proto Heavy Metal live compilation? All of these... Nothing of these.
