OK, this is THE darkest folk prog album I think I have. So, first off, be warned; This is not happy, nice, pleasent...none of this, this is pure evil folk, darkest day of your life music with moments of the aformentioned pleasentness shining through with blissful glory (i.e. sections of The Herald)...and by God does this create one of the most fantastic experiences of your life...this all depending firmly on your mood. I can almost never listen to this album...only once in a while I can really give it a good listen. This is because it is so dark, and I do not have a strong ear for this mood, although, I must say I enjoy alot of what is on here, espeicially "The Herald" which I find a masterpiece. "First Utterance" is just so incredibly dark and ugly that it really takes a rare bunch to fully appreciate what is on here. Like I said, though, I love this stuff when I am ready to listen to it, which is not very often! Though I can't down it too often, when I actually DO listen, it is fantastic...so to say I don't listen much is not saying I don't love this album. The key reason I give this such a high rating is because it achieves that darkness so well, and the music really is "perfect" in that sense. The album flows really well and the mood is kept strong. By the way, that real "mood" found on here is almost indescribable it is just so....strange...it gives off such a weird vibe it is impossible to explain! I don't give this a 10/10 because I think "The Herald" is the real high point and it never hits that again. What they achieve on "The Herald" would make this album a perfect album, but the rest of the tracks are just overall enjoyable, great tracks, some maybe just fillers of eerie noise and sound but this is what Comus is. Well, I write this a few weeks before Halloween and I can sure say it sets the mood well :)! Great album, but be advised, not for everyone.
