BRAIN SALAD SURGERY

"Brain Salad Surgery" is quite an enjoyable prog album, but it does embodie everything people seem to despise about the genre. Completely over the top, pretentious- and very cheesy at times. But- i like it! The band was comprised of certainly talented people, but the compositions seem a bit on the lazy side. The centerpeice of this album is the epic "Karn Evil 9" which, while enjoyable, does seem kind of thrown together, as the three movements could have nothing less to do with eachother. The first "impression" is by far the best track on this album- and the third being so very cheesey it almost makes me cringe. There is no denying the musical talent of these three men, but this is exactly the kind of stuff that makes people cringe when you mention the word "Prog". An enjoyable album nonetheless. 3.5/5
