REVIVAL

An obscure pearl from Iraq. Al Basim (Basim Al Hashimi) recorded this album "Revival" in USA back in 1979 with fellow musicians but considering the time and origin its commercial appeal had to be very limited. The all instrumental music is a rich tapestry of sounds, where Basim's guitar, flute and sax are the prominent instruments. Ethnic influences from Arabic traditions and free Jazz overtones here and there, make this a gem. It reminds the 60's california psychedelic group Kaleidoscope and many 70's Krautrock bands especially Yatha Sidhra ( A Meditation Mass ). Best songs are the orgiastic " History of the World " and the ethereal " Poitiers ". Fans of the aforementioned groups will adore this. A solid 4 stars and a must from Iraq.
