5 stars Well to be perfectly honest, this is such an essential development in rock and roll and features such well crafted songs it simply deserves no less than 5 stars...even on this progressive rock site. From the rocking and catchy "Break on Through" to the incredibly intense "The End" this is a testament to one of the best rock bands ever. Progressive nods are all over the place and clearly this album influenced many of the prog rock bands of the early 70's.

This album has a few of what I call "Essential moments in rock and roll history" The gentle and mystical crooning of "The Crystal Ship", the way the organ segues into the verse on "Light My Fire", the incredibly amazing little vocal work at the start of "Back Door Man" which are basically a few yelps. "The End" has an incredible spoken part...can't really describe how intense it is (Father, yes son?)

This must be listened to...it is just too good for words. Even though this is Progarchives I cant really stop from rating it 5 stars...beautiful and intense. So good.
