Kevin Geier comes from Altadena, California, raised in a family of music teachers and guitar player since the age of 14.His collaborations included just a couple of high-school bands and during his second year at the Oberlin College, around 2010, he begun composing his first solo record.This came to completion the following year with the recordings taking place in Alhambra and Geier playing guitars, bass, keyboards and piano.Drummer Julian Albinski-Euler helped throughout the sessions and the album was launched in November 2011 in several digital music stores under the title ''Lost in thought''.Geier's composing talent and impressive guitar technique are the basic stand-outs in an album close to the style of far neighbours NEO STAR NOVA-Z, basically this is a powerful, guitar-based, instrumental Heavy Rock experience with some electronic backgrounds and dominant orchestral soundscapes.While the music is mostly marching and dynamic with emphasis on angular riffs and edgy lead parts, Geier's solos often draw influence from Neo-Classical Music and come as a breeze of clean air among the storm of passionate electric textures.I can name DAVID GILMOUR, STEVE VAI and JOE PETRUCCI as the most apparent influences along with bands like PINK FLOYD and PORCUPINE TREE regarding the atmospheric depth of the album.With Geier often putting his electric guitar aside and handling the acoustic strings, especially in the long ''Synapse symphony I: Dancing lights'', the music may sound too guitar-based, but the man has colored the enviroment with some keyboard lines, soft acoustics and even light Classical orientations, which are propably too few to pull the whole thing out of the aforementioned influences, but definitely offer a more diverse and flexible musical background.Of course there is a lot to learn in the process, a few orchestral moves sound quite thin, while some electronic beats are too digital for my tastes.On the other hand Geier has put up a nice show of grandiose atmospheres and monumental riff/soloing, which is hard to forget, there is some serious talent here. Modern era Heavy Rock, all instrumental, with emphasis on guitar, but flavored with Neo-Classical and electronic elements.Pretty fine debut, performed with passion and energy.Recommended.
