IO E IL TEMPO

I can't say why precisely, but I don't like this album quite as much as the last one. It is the exact same format, 2 large scale epics. It is the exact same style, 70's Italian symphonic. Same band members, same lyricist. So what is different. Well, it just seems to me that some of the themes and progressions are drawn out longer than they should be, and they are in general a bit weaker than the previous album. Perhaps Walter Pini shouldn't have tried to do yet another album consisting of 2 epics? 2 years after the previous album, you'd think this would be stronger.

Still, it is a good album. Everything I liked about the previous one is here, aside from my reservations mentioned above. The fantastic vocals, great vintage keyboards, 70's Italian retro style that doesn't seem like a rip off, but more of a band from that era that you haven't heard before. The first epic, much like the previous album, is the better one in my opinion. Having a bit more drama and variation that the longer second epic, as well as a great symphonic ending. But both flow well and are very cohesive. The only fault I can really make with these two album is how similar they are to each other. Probably a bit much to hear them back to back, but other than that, very satisfying stuff for the Italian prog enthusiast like myself.

I still prefer the previous album, so I docked this one a quarter star, but round up for the archives. They are so similar that I'd say either one will give you a good idea of whether you like the band or not. And if you do, get all the albums as they are pretty much equal in style and quality (though the last album is somewhat different with a different singer and no guitar, but not drastically different in style).
