THINK IT OVER

By September 1980 keyboard player and main songwriter Ken Hensley have left the band, being replaced by Gregg Dechert. The band carried on for some time, and they recorded this single, which was the last product they recorded before they split in March 1981.

It is hard to say that this single is by a band called URIAH HEEP as the musical style of both songs is hardly recognizable as being very characteristic from this band. But since 1976 when lead singer David Byron was fired the band gradually recorded music which was more oriented to radio playing. So, it really was not so "strange" to find that by their last single before reforming in 1982 with a different line- up which only included guitarist Mick Box as the only original member of the band (like in this single) the sound of the band became more far from their original music style of the early seventies. So, while both songs of this single are not really bad, they are very far from the band`s "old" sound.

"Think It Over" has a good guitar riff which is the basic part of the song. Lead singer John Sloman`s voice sounds very different from previous singers of the band (Byron and John Lawton). It sounds a bit "thin" in comparison. The guitars are the main instrument in this song with some background keyboards. Trevor Bolder`s bass sounds very powerful.

"My Joanna Needs Tuning" in the "B" side sounds a bit more "commercial" with a piano riff which reminds me of other Rock bands of the seventies and the eighties (maybe the DOOBIE BROTHERS with Michael McDonald?). But again, the keyboards are more in the background with the guitars being the main instruments.

With this single URIAH HEEP was going into a very different music direction which maybe was an indication of the Hard Rock music style which was going to be recorded by other bands in the eighties.

"Think It Over" was recorded again by the reformed line-up of the band for their 1982 album titled "Abominog", and both tracks of this single were included as bonus tracks in one of the re-issues of their "Conquest" album.
