DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED

Honestly, this is a very good album. It is an important record that helped change the music scene in the late 60's, and helped shape progressive music. Days of Future Passed is well appreciated for its innovation and historical significance.

But I would be rather hesitant to call it a masterpiece. It's great historically but it doesn't hold up as an album as well as many people would lead you to believe. Some parts are heavily dated, mainly the orchestration. "The Morning: Another Morning" is a naive little song that repeats the same flute progression. Three songs at the end of the album really allow the band to play without too much interruption by the orchestra. They are: "The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon", "Evening: Sun Set/Twilight Time", and "The Night: Nights In White Satin". These are the best pieces on the record.

Perhaps the reason you listen to this album the most for is the song "Nights In White Satin". Just a great song. The chorus "Yes I love you, oh how I love you" and the backing symphony are very powerful together. I also like the poetry and even the melodramatic ending.

Comparing this to other albums from 1967 like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club by The Beatles, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, or even The Doors' self titled album, Days of Future Passed seems not as classic. Take whatever I say with a grain of salt and listen to it for yourself to judge whether you love it or not. Maybe I'll come back to it some time in the future and it will be a masterpiece. For now, it is just "good".
