5 stars No requirement should be imposed on a phenomenon outside the coordinate system this phenomenon belongs to. A synth-pop album must not be rated as bad just because it's synth-pop. The 1985 effort by Novela is IM(un)HO a great synth-pop album. Just to make the things clear: for example, Under Wraps by Jethro Tull is what I consider a mediocre synth-pop album. Vulgar themes, 'plastic' sound, easily predictable turns of melodies (if those are melodies at all) etc. In comparison to it, Brain Of Balance is inventive, full of sincere emotion, logically constructed and intelligently performed. (By the way, not to be forgotten: I like the vocals by Miyamoto-san much better than heavily tremolating vocals by Igarashi-san!) Moreover, some tracks tend to something that could be called 'progressive synth-pop'. Yes in the terms of prog rock Brain Of Balance is no big deal. But should we apply the terms of prog rock to a substance that is not prog rock? Undoubtedly no. One might as well rate Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier as a rap album and (therefore!) give one star to it. Let's not fall into absurdity.
