5 stars Is there life on Kobaļa?

The saga of some troubled earthlings travel to, and stay on planet Kobaļa is a dramatic and mysterious one. I'm more intrigued by this tale in a made up language, on a made up planet than any other science fiction, or far out concept I've ever heard, read or seen.

Magma's debut is not looked upon as one of their best or most important. I have no idea why not. Is it because Zeuhlbass-signature inventor Jannik Top hasn't joined the band yet? Francis Moze's bassplaying is inventive and brilliant all through the album, so it shouldn't be an issue. For fans of wild and eclectic beauty this album contains all you can dream of, and more.

Except that its a double album, the real bonus here is Teddy Lasry's sublime fluteplaying. His 20th century classical, late romantic/early impressionistic style perfectly contrasts Christian Vander's intense avantgardejazz-rock arrangements. Magma's most varied release, and their album of the most truly beautiful moments, traditionally speaking.

Magma has one of the strongest discographies of all the seventies bands, but they're debut has ended up being my favorite. This is where it starts for for Magma and Zeuhl and if you don't know either, I strongly suggest you start here too.

Remember: If you don't like this, try again and again and again and again.
