3 stars To me this album was trodden on by Space Ritual. With Space Ritual you get the whole shebang. The poetry, the uptempo amphetamine rock, the works. This album sound a bit like demos or rehearsal tapes for the tour. The bonus track Brainbox polution doesn't help much either, as it sounds like the stuff churned out by old men in a pub-rock band, BEFORE Hawkwind became old men in a pub-rock band (in some sort of Nostrodamus manner!!!).

This doesn't mean the album is bad. Brainstrom cuts straight in, giving the impression that the stilus/laser has just entered into the atmosphere on Hawkwind, where things are likethis all the time maaaan, for hours and hours on end. This is partly true, the album was cut and condensed from hours of tapes of Jamming (man those drugs were strong).

Lord of light shows in graphic detail Lemmy's new bass style, as he climbes about the intro (although he does it again in better detail on the Space Ritual version). Also the acoustic numbers Down through the Night and Space is Deep don't have the same blood as the Space Ritual versions. They are ok, but just not making the same aural fuss, or have the same impact as the live cuts. The Watcher wasn't recorded live for Space ritual, but was recorded on the 1999 party album recorded live in 1974, and has (comically) Lemmy playing the acoustic guitar part on Rickenbacker bass. Crazy stuff.

Sometimes I have to disagree on Hawkwind's vocal processing technique. The backwards delay on Down through the Night cause me great annoyance, as they are TOO MUCH. I can stand that effect, but having heard Space Ritual's version 'do it' just as well without reverse d-de-del-delay I don't see the point.

The sound of later albums (Quark for one) is heard in Ejection, so its amazing they regressed a little for Space Ritual, into grunge terretory if the cleaner sound was there to be had.

Oh well. Ok album, but Space Ritual is better.
