The (Ec) Nudes biography
A trio consisting of Chris Cutler (drums, radio, electrics), Amy Denio (bass, alto sax, accordion and singing) and Wadi Gysi (guitars) which recorded one album in 1993 called Vanishing Point.

How did this project come to life:
Chris Cutler has been in contact with Amy Denio for a long period before even meeting her, since Recommended Records was distributing her first LP.
In 1992 Chris Cutler was touring with Wadi Gysi and Hans Reichel. The last two had been touring with Amy Denio shortly before that. Chris and Wadi did some duo shows together and during those they began discussing the possibility of forming a group which will play composed music and not improvised as they did. When thinking of whom to ask to join them, they thought of Amy Denio. They contacted her and she agreed to join.

The next step:
The process from then on was pretty smooth. Chris wrote several texts and sent them to Amy and Wadi. They later met, composed and arranged the tracks, rehearsed them and were ready to tour together, after which they recorded the album. After recording, Chris thought that the mixing would be best done by Bob Drake as he had fears it would be somewhat of a problematic issue. So the band sent the songs to Bob in LA, and the excellent result can be heard on the album. Chris says about this, that this was the first time he had not been involved in mixing before, but in this case, he wanted someone like Bob with "fresh" ears to do the job. In the following touring of the band, they invited Bob to join the lineup, especially since Amy was playing several roles in the band. The extended lineup toured Europe and Brazil. Due to time limitations and other obligations, Chris had to leave the band, and Amy and Wadi carried on as The Pale Nudes with new members.

Music:
Thrilling, engaging and dynamic rock, with the ferocity of the sax, guitars and drums, this album is a delight to listen to. It has all sorts of mood in it; ranging from fast, fun and a bit cranky (Opening) through, slow and somewhat melancholic (Axis), to slightly quirky (Delta) to more crazy (It Might Be Better) and to more fun and lighthearted parts. There is some jazz, , some post-punk, some funk, some avant-garde; but in general, there is a clear frame to the album and songs, a coherence that allows some going wild in a "controlled environment". This is an album that is a joy to listen to.

3 stars Before I begin this review properly, I feel obliged to point out that this album comes with a level 4 Accordion Warning. Those with a severe aversion to accordions and their tendency to add a sea shanty/French café ambience to any given song should best steer clear of this album.

So, with that out of the way, let's get down to details. The line-up on this album consists of Amy Denio on bass, sax, accordion and vocals, Wadi Gysi on guitars and Christ Cutler (most likely a familiar name to anyone finds themselves reading this review) - on drums plus radio and electrics.

This provides a good instrumental palate for some quirky avant-rock shenanigans, which is exactly what we get on this album. The tone throughout is pretty light and straight-forward, especially bearing in mind the involvement of Cutler (not to mention fifth (EC) Nude Bob Drake, who mixed the album). Dissonance and challenging harmonies are certainly present on this album, but far less than one might expect. The focus here is on quirky melodies and tight arrangements not full-blown, mind-shattering avant-garde compositions.

The stand-out member of the group is undoubtedly Amy Denio, whose voice punches through every song it appears on with real conviction and gusto. Her sax and afore-mentioned accordion work is also very strong here, and provides many of the albums highlights.

Sadly, the aforementioned highlights are somewhat sparse. There's some great fun to be had on tracks like "It Might Be Better" and, my personal favourite, "Radio". But overall the album seems to drift along, despite its often frantic pace and sense of urgency. The melodies are well-composed and occasionally a bit poppy, but few of them are particularly memorable which is, in my opinion, a substantial failing for any album, regardless of genre.

Nonetheless, I'd happily recommend this album to those who enjoy the rockier side of avant-prog, as there's plenty to enjoy here if you like that sort of thing. Just don't expect any ear-rattling blasts of dissonant RIO, or you may find yourself feeling somewhat disappointed.

Thanks to avestin for the artist addition.
