Progressive Biography

I love music. It's simple as that. It all started when my dad showed me the movie 'Yellow Submarine' and I was forever in love with The Beatles. It happened that my favorite songs by the band were the more psychedelic and experimental ones, so I guess I've been looking for prog since I was in 2nd grade. I heard Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick one day at a relatives house and I realized that it was a necessity to get this album. So I got it, fell in love with it, and still find it to me one of my all time favorite albums ever. I started hearing bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, King Crimson, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, Genesis, Rush, and all those great classic rock bands and I was catapulted into a maelstrom of progressive rock. One day I only listened to 'classic rock', then I started listening to stuff like Van Der Graaf Generator, Can, Soft Machine, The Velvet Underground, Hawkwind, and all kinds of freaked out experimental groups. Because of Prog Archives I was being propelled on a incredible musical journey.

While prog is just one genre of music I love, I find that it introduced me to most music I listen to by putting me on the musical journey I speak of. I listen to lots of Indie now, bands like The Flaming Lips, Beck, Ween, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Comets on Fire, Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Yo La Tengo, Olivia Tremor Control, and lots of other great bands.

It was never the bombastic and pompous side of prog that made me love the genre. It was the whole idea that rock bands were doing whatever they wanted and were being weird and experimental just for the hell of it. It was the whole idea that in rock'n'roll is a musical genre which granted artist complete musical freedom. I find that prog is often the genre that takes full advantage of this.
