Progressive Biography

Hello one and all and thankyou for bothering to visit. I am a High School teacher, turned into a Junior teacher eventually. I specialise in English, Writing and Literacy, but have taught SOSE, Science and bits of this and that in my career including relief teaching. I have assisted in marking exams and folios too.

I am an avid 'Star Wars' collector... I collect 70s memorabilia of the series in particular, the vintage action figures, in all guises, all the vehicles and starships, books, odds and ends; I get into that. It was my number one hobby until prog arrived in my life dominating over all.

I live in Australia, have a pet cat, dogs, goldfish, budgies, and a pet family including a wife, and three gorgeous kids. In 1987 my life completely changed and I became a Christian. I play guitar in the church and write my own songs occasionally. I am also a drama leader and run theatrical performances.

1990 was the worst year of my life! I met a girl who completely betrayed me. It was hell on earth. But I found the perfect girl for me in 1993. In 1994 I became engaged and married a year later. In 1997 we had our first daughter, and our lives were transformed forever. 2001 was a great year because my second daughter was born. My son was born in 2007. My life was caught up with the new arrival. It wasn't until 2002 that I really got into the collecting side again.

I love science fiction - movies and TV shows such as Gerry Anderson's UFO, Star Trek, Dr Who and Red Dwarf. I write out or transcribe scripts to TV series such as UFO and have written out scripts to movies such as Star Wars saga and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

My main hobby at this stage is collecting music. I love progressive Rock such as Genesis, Hawkwind, Rush, Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Atomic Rooster, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Ayreon, The Beatles, Kraftwerk, and so many others. Actually there is not much in the prog scene that I do not like. I like particular genres such as space, symphonic, RPI, metal, electronic, folk, and heavy prog but am partial to all genres in some way. It is the greatest music on the planet.

Early prog memories:

I remember my dad coming home from a late night shift with a King Crimson vinyl tucked under his arm. It had the Red faced screamer on the cover and it scared me but he said I might like it, knowing I was into horror.... I loved parts of it such as 21st Century Schizoid Man and parts I hardly played. I also remember the Black ELP cover of Works and I only liked Fanfare for the Common Man. I also had Take A Pebble on cassette but can't remember how I got it. Yes' Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround were also on cassette somehow. I have no idea where I got them as I had no Yes albums. I also knew Jethro Tull's Bungle in the Jungle lyrics off by heart at the age of 8 but it was taped off radio!

My first purchase? It had to be in the 70s when I was a teen and got into particular artists and didn't know they were prog. I bought many Kraftwerk albums beginning with "Man Machine" so that counts and Trans Europe Express.

I had "Aqualung" vinyl given to me but too young to appreciate it, though I played the title track many times. I somehow got hold of "War of the Worlds" by Jeff Wayne - birthday I think, thanks Mum, and I played it ad infinitum! From there I got into The Moody Blues and had 2 compilation albums.

I also had Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygene" and played it often after seeing "Gallipoli". I had many soundtracks of movies so I was kind of into weird classical dramatic stuff.

This was in the late 70s and from there I began to get hold of all Pink Floyd starting with The Wall because I saw the film and someone at college told me it was the best thing he had ever heard. Strangely enough I didn't get Dark Side of the Moon until the 80s, but did get Animals, A Nice Pair, and The Final Cut. I didn't really like them much at first but they kept my interest up and I finally grew up and loved them. When I heard Dark Side of the Moon I was addicted for life! Yes, I also watched it many times synched with Wizard of Oz.

Compilations have a lot to answer for! I had one song by Hawkwind, Silver Machine, and also some Marillion, and ended up buying the vinyl of Misplaced Childhood and loving it. I don't know why I didn't buy anymore Marillion up till recently.

I had heard of Genesis but only Invisible Touch and Duke. I was at a friend's place who played Yes' Owner of a Lonely Heart and the rest of 90125 and I had to have it!

My big Prog splurge happened when I discovered the term actually existed. I bought all of Rush, having discovered them in a Mojo magazine, and they became my favourite artist. Then all of Hawkwind, King Crimson box sets and individual CDs, Yes including box sets, all Atomic Rooster, Genesis and all ELP and VDGG. ...and many others since.... such as Dream Theater, Ayreon and Porcupine Tree.

I would say from my prog experience that there are 7 wonders of the prog world in the way of songs: Van Der Graaf Generator's 'A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers', Yes' 'Close To The Edge', ELP's 'Karn Evil 9', King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man', Pink Floyd's 'Shine On', Rush's '2112', and Genesis' 'Supper's Ready'.

The seven wonders of the prog world in the way of albums are similar as far as I am concerned: Van Der Graaf Generator's "Pawn Hearts", Yes' "Close To The Edge", ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery", King Crimson's "In The Court of The Crimson King", Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon", Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick", and Genesis' "Foxtrot".

I review prog albums on this site quite prolifically and my obsession did not go unnoticed as I was promoted to Prog Reviewer in April 2010, a real honour to do what I love as a hobby. Then I was promoted to Symphonic Prog team member in May 2010, so I can vote for bands to go on the Symphonic section. I was eventually promoted to Collaborator on the Symphonic Team so I can add artist's bios, help determine whether new proposed bands should be added, and really make a difference here.

I also love the retro eighties era of music particularly Gary Numan who I have been obsessively following since the late 70s and I have all of his material. I am also into Toyah's music. Especially the eighties CDs Anthem, Changeling, Minx.

I also love retro music from Ultravox, Visage, Devo, The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Runaways, Girlschool, Kraftwerk, CCR. I have all these group's CDs, many of the vinyl releases, and many DVDs in my collection. I am into glam metal and am on the Glam Metal team in the Metal Music Archives website.

I respond to all PMs and try to be as encouraging as I can. I hit the forums quite regularly, sometimes obsessively, so if you see me there have a chat. I am very friendly and like to have fun without being obnoxious or rude, which I find distasteful.

Hope you can be friends soon.
Cheers, Scott.
