Progressive Biography

Year of birth: 1970. Occupation: librarian specializing in music. Also a published writer specializing on progressive music and on literature.

My earliest album listening history in my early teens (thanks to my elder brother and sister) included bands like Saga, Asia and Yes (90125) among the more usual pop from ABBA to Dire Straits. Progressive rock was already playing a significant role when I started to buy albums of my own in the age of fifteen. MARILLION was my first object of enthusiam, but quite soon I concentrated on the classic era of prog. My oldest favourites are GENESIS, YES, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL, MIKE OLDFIELD, STEVE HACKETT, Peter Gabriel, RENAISSANCE, MOODY BLUES, some of King Crimson, Supertramp, Talk Talk and Kate Bush.

In addition to prog I listen to many types of music, from pop, jazz and entertainment music to folk, electronic music and art music. Further long-time non-Finnish prog favourites include JETHRO TULL, GENTLE GIANT, CARAVAN, VDGG/Peter Hammill, VANGELIS, Tangerine Dream, STRAWBS, Gryphon, Barclay James Harvest, etc. My home library of prog has expanded enormously by now, but I'm endlessly keen on finding new artists!

I have written to the Finnish Prog Magazine COLOSSUS since 2010 (sadly the printed magazine came to an end in 2015). In 2013 I released the first Finnish-language handbook on international prog, describing background and albums of hundreds of artists from the UK, Europe (Finland excluded) and North America. The translation of the book title is "Gates of Dawn - Progressive Rock 1967-1979". My second prog book deals with the Finnish prog all-time: "PROG FINLANDIA" was released on September 2016. The follow-up for the book on international prog, titled after the Willowglass album The Dream Harbour, was released in January 2021. The 464-page book deals with over 600 artists.

In the ProgArchives I am pleased to review albums also at the artists' request, but only with physical releases received for that purpose (not on downloads). Prog's subgenres that I'm less interested in include Prog Metal, Heavy Prog and RIO/Avant-Prog. Please feel free to take contact.
