Progressive Biography
Was born, started listening to music at I guess sixteen/seventeenish (first Dire Straits, then ELP, then Genesis, then more stuff) and haven't stopped yet, though I'm probably not acquiring things at the same pace. Current ambitions are to acquire a proper education in spite of university, watch more westerns, write stuff and keep servals.
I occasionally toy with the idea of taking down all my old reviews in a fit of embarrassment, but that'd be kind of pointless.
A note on approach: probably changing to the excellent Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD ratings approach, with a basic 4 star system with an additional crown for particularly outstanding things. 2 is/will be more my default 'this is OK' rating than the usual 3. Some editing of scores will probably be both converting stuff to this system and also reflecting changed tastes, so if the review says something other than the results, that may explain the discrepancy. Hence:
1 star: between plainly bad and excoriable. (e.g. Scenes From A Memory Metropolis)
2 stars: decent or very mixed quality, often either an inoffensive but unexceptional rock album such as Black Moon or a more experimental album which hasn't really come off (such as Three Of A Perfect Pair)
3 stars: a markedly good album, may have a few noticeable flaws, but usually has a point and makes it well, and has some exceptional material on it. L'Isola Di Niente and Benefit would probably fall into this.
4 stars: usually either a masterpiece with a couple of problems or just a very solid album which doesn't quite manage to inspire my generosity. I'd probably put PG 4 and Trilogy into this one.
5 stars/Crown: a masterpiece, and a personal favourite as well. Not neccessarily flawless, but invariably sends shivers down the spine.
