I have always thought that Stairway to Heaven was grossly over-rated. It waffles along threatening to go somewhere and then just peters out.

Does this mean that Hot Dog is a good song?

Hardly their best song, it's just a p*** take they recorded for a laugh. Page fluffs the intro guitar but Bonham's drumming just about carries it through.

One of the good things about the Zeppelin song man ship was their eschewing of choruses. What is there, Communication Breakdown? All My Love? Get a virtual non entity like Ozone Baby and the tune Plants puts in this makes it a quite appealing number saving the backing track! But a really great example of a song that avoids the chorus is That's The Way. Those guitars and the placing of the bass just at the end (arrangement) gives it a very subtle and, um, understated, majestic feel. No sing along choruses - the complete opposite of say The Beatles or Beach Boys. One of the many reasons why Zeppelin really a re a progressive rock band. (Nothing wrong with choruses I should add, just very brave to not do that...) Mind you Plant doesn't do choruses much in his solo career either.
Stairway works as a song and a piece which leads to the well timed minimalist guitar solo and blazing last verse. The piece works around the relative minor and two major key themes before the climax. No chorus but a refrain of the title. Not a traditional pop song but more classical and lyrically, strictly a ballad (sung in the third person).
Even more classical is Kashmir. (I really recommend listening to this one fro the drums upwards which is how it originated.) The verse is the main ascending riff the desending suspensions works in lieu of a chorus. Now it is desert music which happens in a different personal perception of time - a long contemplative number rather than a thrash. It took a while for me to get into this one years ago but then all the harmonies come clear(er) after a few listens.
I really recommend the Symphonic Led Zeppelin album (arr. Jaz Colman) for another perspective on the harmonic arrangements of Zeppelin. But they were not really a pop group.
At the end of the last Earls Court gig PLant asks his bandmates if they have any hits. Page shakes his head. Then, ha ha, they play D'yer Mak'er as an encore...
Worst (but not "bad") number... (I originally thought this was a trick question). But significantly Autumn Lake (Hurdy Gurdy solo from the movie) has not had an audio release... so... twist my arm... oh! it's not on the list there. Thank gawd. Can't vote here. But some interesting posts!

A little surprised at the hate for D'yer.....love that odd time signature and Plant pushing the beat with his "please, please, please" interjections. It's the later Zep that grated, especially Wearing and Tearing.....I remember buying Coda as a kid and realizing that Out Door wasn't just a fluke - if they'd continued with that sound, the band would've imploded and fans would've left 'em behind. Neither Plant nor Page had much success solowise for quite a while after Zep.....they sold, especially Plant, but the music - outside of Big Log! - just never clicked with me and a lot of folks.....Plant had to revert to doing Zep songs and the occasional regrouping with Page to push sales.....went to a Plant show back in the late '80s and it was more Bon Jovi than Zep. Leather pants posturing with hot shot guitarist who was all pose and flair - a lot of bending and tapping but no feel. Like Gilmore, Plant is now in his solo prime - the way his voice has settled into that lower register is just perfect fro the bluesy, folksy, archivist direction he's taken.

Led Zeppelin has produced quite a few brilliant tunes in their time, but quite a few dull and tedious ones too. Especially on the last couple of albums.

Dyer Maker is in "reggae time" with beats accented differently - it's 4/4 but done with off beats accented....but Bonham handles is very well.....I also think there was some studio trickery involved 'cause the drums sound so different from the usual Bonzo bashing. Some drummers have a tough time picking up the reggae beat. Both the Crunge and Dyer were sound experiments for the band - funk and reggae added to their usual bombastic blues. I still think Houses is one of their finest moments.

I won't choose a song but I get bored by 12-bar blues songs, and Led Zeppelin's contributions to that genre are mostly no exception.
