Metallica was just atrocious when I saw them.  There was one track, Fade to Black I think, where the band was about 1-2 mins into the song before anyone even realize what it was.  Very sloppy playing, but maybe they were just drunk that night.  It was the 80s.  Justice Tour.  They were still partying a lot at that time I would imagine.
saw Metallica live with Godsmack, the latter being much more enjoyable. The problem with Metallica live is that Hetfield needs to "shut up" on the guitar and let Kirk take the sound. I can tell Hetfield doesn't take any pointers on how to perform well. Is he loaded? There are NO Harmonies. Lars doesn't say a word, the bass [player plays a solo not ten minutes into the show, and generally Hetfield runs the show to his liking and he is ANTI-anything except grinding his guitar so loud that it masques Kirk's guitar. The show was pretty bad. Godsmack was superb
