I have a question for people who've heard the new compilation "The First 20 Years." Are the tracks on the first CD (Neal Morse Era) re-recordings with the current lineup, or are they remasters? The credits for the album seem to suggest the former.

Pretty exciting news about the band reuniting to perform Snow in its entirety at Morsefest this summer. That might be a good reason for a roadtrip. Although, more likely I will just wait for the DVD to be released.

Hmm..... I must be the only Spocks Beard fan who thinks V was their last (and best) really good album. Snow always left me cold and while there are some nice things on X, Nocturnes, and Oblivion Particle they pale imho compared to V.

V might very well be their last "really good" album but some of the others are also really good. To me V could easily have been the first Transatlantic album also. For me it's pretty hard to beat The Light, they both flip flop for me.

Time for me to put in my 2 bobs worth - absolutely love The Oblivion Particle. A definite step up from Brief Nocturnes........I notice the odd 'psychedelic' vibe here and there as well. Such a great album, not even missing Neil or Nick either.

Hmmm difficult to statement to make that missing nether Neil or Nick? both musicians added there own magical musical musicianship within there time with the band. maybe that`s just my own point of view but its true so they`ll both be missed but the beard go`s on, on and on..........

^ Yes, well of course they are missed, but what I was trying to say is that Ted Leonard is an excellent singer, and young Jimmy Keegan is more than adequate on the drums. Top replacements for those massive shoes to fill. So long as Ryo and Dave are still there, the magic lives on for sure. There's something about The Oblivion Particle that blows me away, I haven't been this impressed since V.

When it was released I was totally unimpressed with Oblivion Particle. However, I'm due to revisit it.
When I bought V, I was similarly unimpressed and it sat on my CD rack for a couple of years. I took it back out and listened to it on a whim and loved it instantly. Maybe it needed to germinate in my brain for a while
I loved X. Best post Morse album to that point and maybe best post Morse album ever. Nocturnes has some really strong songs and some really weak stuff. Submerged is a smelly turd

^ Yeah - Submerged is the reason I can't rate Nocturnes too highly. Still a very, very good album.

Genuinely surprised by this opinion. Submerged is a very accessible track, and arguably not prog, but I think it's great. Brief Nocturnes is my favourite SB album to date, followed by Snow. V I find a bit noisy, and The Oblivion Particle is a bit hit and miss, but has some great tracks. I have just bought the First 20 Years and really enjoyed The Light in particular. I may get round to trying some of the earlier albums in their entirety, but I suspect I prefer their current lineup. I find I need to be in the right mood to enjoy SB properly.

I listen to that song and it seems evident to me that it was a blatant attempt to make SB appeal to a wider, non-prog audience. It sounds like just another bland, uninteresting song that could have been made by any number of pop bands. Not SB-like at all. I listen to the Beard for songs that have a bit more sophistication, or are more interesting, than a song like Submerged.

The Light is great. It's one of the early albums that I keep going back to over and over.
As far as the lineup is concerned, I prefer the classic Beard lineup to today's band. I'm still not convinced that Ted Leonard is the right guy for this band.
