I looked back a few pages and did not see this mentioned. So I apologize if this has been mentioned before.
Anyways, what is everyone's opinion on Spock's Beard? They are easily one of my favorite bands and I love all their albums. My favorite would be Snow, with V and Kindness of Strangers not far behind.

They're not completely loved in these parts, many people say they're rather unoriginal.
Personally I love them, despite my feelings towards blatant
Christianity. To me their best are V, Beware Of Darkness and The Light,
the title track of their first album being my favorite track by them.
They've waned in the last couple of years, but i think their self
titled was a damn fine release and "With Your Kiss" is a highlight of
their entire career.
I've had the chance to chat with Alan and Dave as well, very good guys
and heavily opinionated. From my interviews with them it's going to be
interesting where they head with their next release.

Good album choices! I agree the post Neal stuff has been rather hit or miss, but the self-titled album has them back on track. If I remember correctly, Dave said he'd be upset if a new album wasn't out this year.

yeah - last I heard they were heading into the studio early 2009.
I want to see what happens. Dave wants to take the band in a new direction, a more dark direction, and Alan wants the band to "return to their roots" - a combination of styles like that would be amazing! Imagine "With Your Kiss" played with the epic intensity of the material from V!

They were one of my first prog bands aside from the classics such as Yes, ELP, King Crimson and Genesis. I liked them a lot for a while then stopped liking them and I have recently rebounded into what I think my equilibrium will be. V is an excellent album followed closely by The Light, then Beware of Darkness and Kindess of Strangers are still great. Snow, which I once loved, is now merely OK. Their other releases all only have a couple songs that I actually like while the rest is simply OK or worse.

I like Spock's Beard quite a bit. I have to credit them, Dream Theater, and the Flower Kings with expanding my interest in progressive rock music. I had been listening to Rush, Yes, and ELP for a long time, but it was these newer bands that really brought me into the prog rock fold.

I have really enjoyed exploring their catalogue of albums but have yet to investigate the post-Morse era. Gotta give 'em props for sticking to their guns, though. When it comes to American symphonic prog bands the list is very short (let's see, there's Kansas, then.....) and I'm sure the record labels tried their best to turn them into something a lot more "commercial" so at least they've got the big ones to stand up to them.

Seconded.
V is a great album. Personally, I love the Beard. Like rushfan4 I was drawn to modern prog by the same three bands. Honestly, The Beard is great but I've kind of grown bored with them as of late. I think I listened to too much of the Beard now I'm on overload. I'm certain that they'll jump back into my listening rotation soon.
I did see them last year at 3RP and they sounded fantastic.
Looking forward to the new album, the three post Morse albums were kind of hit and miss for me. I like the thought of epic darkness.

I used to think they were terribly unoriginal (though I really liked them anyways), but having listened to a lot more different prog bands by this point, I can say that they actually sound utterly unique and original to my ears. Sure, they draw from Gentle Giant and so forth, but I've never heard a band that came before them that they really pull much from. Post-Neal is hit or miss, I agree, with the self-titled being the highlight. Post-Beard Neal is also kind of hit or miss. I liked their collaborations together a lot. Their sense of quirk and humor gives them a big advantage over a lot of pretentious and stuffy prog bands from the 70s till now. Those are my thoughts. A good band, though not as flashily prog as some would prefer, but quite entertaining and clever nonetheless.

Spock's Beard were the first "3rd Wave" prog band I ever heard (back in about 1997) and when I first heard "Walking On The Wind" on the radio it completely blew me away. It was certainly the best prog song I'd heard since 1977.
So, a love affair commenced with the mighty Beard from that point and I remember being as excited about seeing them in London in 1999 (I think) as I was about seeing Genesis for the first time in 1980. And, boy were they an amazing band live with Neal Morse at the front or what. Totally exhilerating.
When Neal left after the Snow album came out, it was literally the saddest I've been about any departure from any band (I was too young for Gabriel leaving Genesis ).
The Flower Kings had kinda been sneaking up on me by then and after Neal left Spock's Beard, TFK took over as my current favourite band. I do still have a lot of affection for SB although I don't really get on with the post-Neal albums too well.
I'd be as excited about a Spock's Beard reunion tour with Neal as I would a 5-man Genesis reunion to be honest
Cheers

Nov,
I have the good fortune to live in Pittsburgh, home to a fantastic little prog festival called 3rp, (gearing up for it's second year if I understand correctly).
Last year, we had both 'Spock's Beard' and Neal Morse in the line up.
Sure enough, Spock's Beard played 'The Light' with Neal Morse as their encore.
I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Yeah, Neal Morse left as a result of his conversion.
Plus, I don't see how a certain section of "The Water" reflects blatant Christianity.

Hi Roland
I know all about the 3rp festival from the various forums (Spock's Beard, TFK, etc) and it sounded like an amazing event.
If money was no object It'd have been over there like a shot
I was lucky enough to be on an IT course in LA at the same time as Calprog so I got to see Presto Ballet, IZZ, Sylvan and Echolyn at the event which was brilliant

Ok, so the new album is out and I thought it was time to bump this thread. What are your thoughts on the new album.
Me, I've been in a great mood all week, I've been listening to it non-stop. Currently, I put X up there in my top two Beard CD's (for me only Snow is better). Now I realize it's the newest and the shiniest, but I'm really loving it. It kind of feels like finding a long lost friend.
I believe earlier on page 1, someone said the plan was for this CD to be a combination of darker music and a return to their roots. I'd say they delivered. It's been a while since I've had a few goosebump moments from one CD, but this one gave me quite a few.
Even the song with all of the names in it was really good, not a throw away song at all.
Regardless, this is easily the best NdV era CD by them and the first that doesn't leave me pining for a return of Mr. Morse.
What do you all think?

I REALLY like the new CD X. It seems SB has finally lost the "trying to not sound like Neal was ever in the band" concept and just wrote SB sounding music. BTW got front row seats for the Downey Ca show in Sept.

Garion, I agree and disagree (if I understand what you're trying to day), I don't think they're consciously avoiding any Neal Morse sounding material, though they're not purposely going that way either. I think they've finally found their own sound so to speak. I really don't hear a lot of similarities to a Neal Morse era Beard CD, I just think they've arrived at their own sound and it's a wonderful sound at that.
I am so jealous, I really hope they something closer to Pittsburgh later on this year or next year. I'd love to see the show for this album. (Come back to Pittsburgh guys...we love you here).
Enjoy the show.

I have to say that I absolutely love "X", definitely the best post-Neal Spock's Beard album, and I'd have to say that it surpasses a few Neal-era Spock's Beard albums (which is really hard for me to say). It might rank fourth after Snow, V and Kindness of Strangers.
It is definitely one of their most consistent releases, I love every song and don't ever feel like skipping tracks. And Jaws of Heaven is absolutely one of the best Spock's Beard songs of all-time. I am blown away by it. I also love the names song, but perhaps that is because I get to hear Nick D'Virgilio sing my name I am so happy that my favorite band has finally come into their own sound without Neal.
I get to see the band for the first time live in Downey and I couldn't be more excited. I'm going with my dad, we have seats in the fourth row. It is going to be awesome. I just need to get my dad into X before we go to the concert.

Nate,
See, i put it ahead of V even. V has a great set of bookends but I don't really like the songs in between. "Thoughts II" has some nice moments, but that's about it. With the middle being so unimpressive, I don't quite give it the love that most Beardies do.
Now I'm curious, I need to list their albums in my order of preference...ahh, the problem with being obsessive - compulsive:
1) Snow 2) X 3) The Kindness of Strangers 4) V 5) Beware of Darkness 6) Feel Euphoria 7) Day for Night 8) The Light (Love the title track, can't really listen to "The Water" in front of my three year old") 9) Octane 10) Spock's Beard
Here's a thought, I'd love to hear Neal release a new version of "The Water" sometime. I'd think that he's a little embarrassed by the song at this point, but it really is a great one.

Yeah, I understand what you mean about V, but the only song I don't really love is "Goodbye To Yesterday". I absolutely love "Thoughts Part II", and I think "All On A Sunday" is a fun little song. I used to not like "Revelation", but it has grown on me. But, I mainly consider it one of my favorites because "At The End of the Day" and "The Great Nothing" are my two favorite Spock's Beard songs.
So, here is my ranking: 1. Snow 2. V 3. The Kindness of Strangers 4. X 5. Beware of Darkness 6. Day For Night 7. The Light 8. Octane 9. Spock's Beard 10. Feel Euphoria
It would be nice if Neal did a new version of The Water. I made an edited version for my friend once where I cut out the offensive part. It is a great song.

I actually like "Goodbye to Yesterday" the most out of the 2-5 tracks on V. I like "Thoughts II," but I don't think it is as awesome as most SB fans seem to think. "All on a Sunday" is nice, and "Revelation" is a mixed bag, in that the verses are killer, but the chorus is rather pedestrian. The bookend epics are both tremendous, obviously.
Anyway, the new album, X, is definitely fantastic. I still can't believe how great it is; it is probably their best post-Neal CD (slightly better than the really good Feel Euphoria). "Jaws of Heaven" and "From the Darkness" are both outstanding, and probably two of the best SB songs...of any era! Most of the rest of the CD is damn good, too, with "Kamikaze" being the only song I am somewhat iffy on so far. Regardless, they really hit it out of the park with this one. :)

Good assessment, I was at a "party" over the weekend (me and three other guys sitting around and sharing music). As it turns out, I got to play the last song and I went with "From the Darkness". I think I converted a few new fans.
"Kamikaze" doesn't do a lot for me either but it has some nice moments. I have a love / hate relationship with "The Emperor's Clothes". In general I don't really care for the main themes of the song (Verse and Chorus) but the jazzy middle part is fantastic and, in my mind at least, fairly unexpected from them. I'm not saying that there isn't, but I can't think of any other real jazzy moments in their music. That is something that I'd expect from The Flower Kings. As such, I found it rather refreshing.
I forget if I mentioned this before, but this is the first CD that they've released that doesn't make me pine for the days that Neal was still in the band.

I'd agree on "At the End of the Day", it's my favorite song by them, every time the bassoons(?) come in I still get goosebumps. What a fantastic song and as you all mention, what a fantastic way to open an album.
Amusingly enough, when I first picked up the CD, I was humming the beginning one day and my wife, who hadn't heard the song at the time, looked at me and asked, "Are you singing Mandy? By Barry Manilow?" I was a little indignant
On the bright side, it's gone on to become her favorite Spock's Beard song and one of the reasons that she really likes them as well.

I found V a several years ago and instantly became a fan. I now have all studio releases and love them all. The new album X is incredible...I can't stop listening to it! It's had to name favorites, but Snow and Octane certainly deserve mention. I have made a few prog converts with Octane. On a side note, the same time I found V by SB, I found V by Symphony X. Both saw heavy rotation as road CDs.

^ I'm pretty sure that Nate Wait (or something like that) was included in the names. If you're really curious, figure out the time when it was released and search through the Flower Kings thread around that time, I'm almost certain that one of the people in there is included.

You're right Tom it was Nate Wait. Being me, way back then after I got the cd I just had to check the cd and sure enough Nate is there. I wonder where he got to.........

I don't know if I remember him or not. I guess that that would be pretty neat to hear a favorite band sing your name on CD. I think that these fan-supported albums are a neat idea, but I can't personally bring myself to pay money up front for an album that hasn't been made yet. Not really sure why but it just makes my Spidey-sense tingle I guess.

Yes, my name is sung in the Spock's Beard song "Their Names Escape Me". It was pretty thrilling for me, since they are my favorite band. What actually happened was that I passed originally on having my name in the song just because I didn't have the money and thought it was a little extravagent at the time. Well, my friend (also a Spock's Beard fan) found out about it, and knew that it would be special to me, so he bought it for me for Christmas and gave them my name to sing. I was very grateful to him, and his kindness will forever be immortalized in my music collection

That works for me............V is one of my top prog cd's of all time. Sadly I thInk everything from Snow on is not as good., though it's still interesting. Like many great bands after Morse left the chemistry was simply not the same.

Hey Nate, I'd wondered where you got to. That's a pretty cool story and a neat Christmas present.

Funny, I didn't instantly appreciate Day for Night until I needed space to fill the end of CD2 (of the new album) I burned for a 1200 mile road trip with the wife. Now that it's in heavy rotation, it has really grown on me...but like every SB album, I'll burn out in a month or so and go to another SB album, this time it's 'V'...what a majestic album! This is my first time listening through the QCs. 'The Great Nothing' is simply epic!

yeah, those Morse SB albums have lots of potential for burnout. so many hooks and licks. the Nick and new era SB albums are more slow burners for me.

It's more pop-prog a la Styx rather than epic oriented symphonic prog. This may be why it's not rated as high as others. Still great. I love the cover. That was when the computer generated pics started looking really good.

Crack the Big Sky And a bunch of other good songs. Yeah, I must admit it's one of my least favourites from theirs, probably due to that lack of epicness, but still a good album.

LP's are for nostalgia , just can't be arsed getting my turntable set up really.....CD for convenience.....Vinyl to subject to damage - can't be doing with the tick, tick, tick of an annoying scratch!!!
Mind you that's more acceptable than the bloody annoying Morse lyrics...maybe he should sing in Spanish or summat so we could just listen to his voice along with the rest of the music....it works for Argentinian prog anyway....

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea...

Haha - Good Old Douglas.....Used for great comic effect!!!, mind you I've always liked using the 24 hour clock - and as such - my LCD watch (ive always bought Casio's for cheapness and utility) is essential for such - I've always hated watches with hands for some reason!!!
If that makes me primitive then so be it...

I lost interest in SB after Feel Euphoria but after hearing about X on a Rush related board, I decided to try it out. It's absolutely fantastic!
Bummer the NDV left the band and after the song "submerged", I'm not sure that Ted Leonard is the best fit for the band. However, Brief Nocturnes is next on my list. (can't stop listening to X right now)

Jaws of Heaven is such good track. The second part ("Words of War") is just sick.

I like them a lot and they are one of my favorite post seventies prog bands. However, I lost track of them a long time ago and aside from one album which I still haven't listened to(Octane)never heard anything after SNOW. I did however see them live twice after Neal left which means I saw them live a total of three times. Great band. I think the light might be my favorite but I like everything I have heard by them. A lot of their stuff imo is not really prog but I still enjoy it.

Brief Nocturnes is growing on me. Love I Know Your Secret, Afterthoughts, and Waiting For Me (the most Neal Morse-sounding song since he left the band)
I still think Submerged is a steaming turd of a song though. Have to give the rest of the album more of a listen.

The most Neal Morse-sounding probably because he co-wrote it (and played guitar on it). It definitely has Neal-isms. Also co-wrote Afterthoughts.
I recently got Brief Nocturnes and am enjoying it quite a bit.

Oh, Tom...I've been having this dilemna for quite a while now with many titles. I guess as I'm coming to the end of my renovations, I'm seeing what sort of space I have in my current place and realising that there's not a lot of room left should I keep choosing LPs over CDs. This will become a problem within a few years. I've been on much more of a CD bender the last year or two (as Greg W from Syn-Phonic would certainly know! ). I'm still happy to pick up the one or two vinyls each record fair, but my days of mass-buying many vinyl titles at a time are done, I'm afraid.
The other problem in this case is....I've had the CD of `V' for years now, so it's not as exciting to rebuy it all over again and not play the vinyl!
