Is it just my area of the map (Southwest Washington state) or is there no musicians under the age of 40 (I am 17) who are interested in playing the best type of music. (Genesis style prog) How do you find members of bands those of you that have bands...do you compromise and then try to lure the band toward prog style or what...

Being from the opposite area of the US, I don't know. What the heck's wrong with us guys over 40 anyway?

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Absolutely nothing is wrong with guys over 40. They usually are balanced, non-dramatic, have a lot of experience, and have been playing their instruments for about 20 years, but I'm 17 so starting a band with people 2 decades older than me is out of the question. If it were an acceptable thing I would though.

Good luck. The closest thing I can find people into is the more progressive side of metal. I'm 26, and my old friends (who were into prog to various degrees) and I went separate ways geographically. If you're planning on going to college, you may have some luck there. The problem is you need 2 things: people into prog, and people who can play their instruments to some degree of impressiveness. Then you get into issues about the band as a whole, and what direction you want to go in. I taught myself other instruments (once you learn one, additional ones aren't as problematic) and am learning the art of recording. Doing it all youself might be the best option if you can't find anyone else.

the people in my band and i have all been friends for several years before we started our band, so we kind of grew up listening to similar sorts of music.
if you're still in washington in a few years, i might be going to the university of washington in seattle for my masters and i would appreciate playing with people with similar tastes, so maybe i could be of some assistance (just give it two years), since i play piano/keys. |

musicians who play "disposable pop", or punk musicians, or heavy metal musicians, or blues musicians, country western musicians...etc., etc, etc. ... their number is as the sand on a beach...too many to count. unfortunately, musicians who are genuinely interested in playing progressive rock here in the U.S. number about ____. it's easy to get a band together these days [to perform any of the above mentioned forms]... BUT, most [not all] musicians in the United States - under 40 - are not only NOT interested in playing progressive...they don't even know what it is. [there are musicians even here on this PROG web site/ forum whose music really isn't prog] 1. Look at this list CAREFULLY: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp 2. of the top 20, how many are from the United States ? one band. My point is this: you are probably not going to find any musicians there in your neck of the woods who are interested in playing progressive music who are under 40 OR over 40... and neither am I where i am. Good Progressive Rock music is just not as popular here as it is outside the U.S. . Edited by Utah Man - December 04 2007 at 12:45 |

yes...but i think his point in the original post included the idea of what KIND of band ... i gonna take a wild guess here ... and say that this particular band probably was not a progressive sound. that is part of the issue in this topic . |

All you can do is take a chance and you never know what you'll find.
I certainly didn't expect the prompt responses I got for the ad, which expressed explicit interest in a post, math, kraut, prog-rock sound.... but it's what I got. We might not be symphonic, but there's plenty of progress...
Certainly we all have different interests, but there's always plenty of common ground.
Also, if you have the talent to write all the parts yourself, you could probably find enough musicians to just play with you, even if prog isn't their main passion... just for the fun of playing music.

Perhaps if you composed all the music yourself and assembled a group to play it with you would work better than finding a band and trying to get them to like prog.

with my band i kind of lured them in, but they were music college students and were into mainly jazz and classical in the first place so i don't really know. best bet is to get people looking for a challenge.
