Okay, for real.
I won't say these are the "12 BEST," (a silly concept! ) but here are 12 classic prog albums which I consider to be 5-star efforts, and "essential" to any self-respecting prog collection.
In the order in which they occurred to me:
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Genesis - Foxtrot
Yes - Close to the Edge
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Nektar - Remember the Future
PFM - Photos of Ghosts
Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Can - Future Days
Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure
Note: I could easily name at least one other equally-worthy entry from each of these seminal prog groups, but I wanted 12 different artists.
I like some newer stuff too (IQ is notably absent), but in the interests of sticking to the (arbitrary) 12 album maximum, I limited myself to classic, formative prog rock.
If you don't have these in your prog collection, { insert expletive}!

This is NOT a poll, though, and we have an identically-themed poll in the non-poll prog section.
Ha!
Stick with the thread re-routing tour, Mods!

Peter is so easily amused, many agree that he is worthy of narration.
