Close to the Edge, is the track that truly defines Yes. However.....
The Gates of Delirium is a track that showed Yes actually supporting a cause, a theme (the war sucks thing, yeah) and personally, i think they play much more emotionally on this track.
I listen to Close to the Edge a lot more, and I really enjoy it. It's a wonderous listen that makes me feel like i'm flying on a magic carpet over the himalayas.
But the gates of delirium, has more meaning. The way it starts, you can visualize armies marching towards each other, and firing warning shots, and then the battle section! and then the beautiful Soon section, the aftermath of the war......wow.
It's a really tough decision, but even though i listen to CTTE more, Gates of Delirium is a more powerful piece.

That's a point well made. "Gates" is a track that both lyrically and musically tells an epic tale. Close to the Edge is a great peice of music but any meaning is well-hidden.
Nonetheless I still voted for CTTE....

They're two of my favourite songs of all time, but my vote goes to Gates of Delirium.

We're talking about the songs, not the albums (Gates of Delirium isn't an album).

Gates of Delirium is the one I listen to most often (I have it on a CD with Plague of Lighthousekeepers and Eruption) - the interplay between the musicians is stunning and the lyrics are the best on any of the classic era Yes albums.
CTTE is a better composition in strict formal terms, the vocal harmonies on 'I Get Up I Get Down' are among the best in symphonic prog and it works brilliantly live, but Gates has the edge for me.

I do not want to enter into the discussion of Wakeman vs Moraz.
Both were excellent.
Wakeman lasted longer with Yes (I even see the BIF FIVES a few years
ago live in Brussuels) and produced a (too) huge discography in his
solo carreer (but at least half of it is crap).
So, I prefer Close to the Edge which is, to me, more accessible and
melodious than Gates of Delirium (even if I like very much the "soon"
moments.
Both are of course great songs.

The Gates, and now that I voted, it's 67 vs. 67 votes!
The Gates is more "alive". CTTE is well structured, but Gates is more errr... "happening".

I completely agree with this. Relayer sounds like the band is
working closer together and sharing a lot more than on Close to the
Edge, which is also great, but not as memorable or inspiring as Gates
or any other parts of Relayer.
Yes all ready proved they were really smart with Fragile. They
did it again with Close to the Edge. Than they realized (all but
Wakeman I guess...) that they didn't have to act as smart and made
TFTO. Relayer became the perfect follow up to their new found
revelation.
