For me, its gotta be...

ICELAND!!!!!

Well, if were counting more than 1 band, North America.

I'm refuring to Modern prog here. If I had to vote for the 60/70s, Britain.

hmmm...

more famous - England

better..... Italy  so many great albums put out by groups that never got a chance to put out substandard albums before they broke up... faded away... or whatever happened to so many groups there.

just to make a comment on the question...

Is Britain a nation? I don't think so...

As far as I know there are three nationalities on the island

English, Scots and Welsh... of course a Brit knows more about this
- so in your question probably Britain should be replaced by England I guess - no offence

then I would say England

You're very young, aren't you? Completely unaware of musical history? Don't get out much?Stern Smile

The US invented: rock, blues, country and jazz, plus soul, motown, funk, bluegrass, rap, hip hop, disco, etc, etc! (Perhaps you've heard of some of them?)

Every type of music is available there, from the most commercial crap, to the hardest-hitting folk, to the coolest jazz, to the most avant-garde, weird, experimental music. It has a huge music scene, with something for all tastes. They have crap bands, average bands, good bands and great bands. They even have some very good prog bands, these days.

No offence, but who in the heck is voting for Australia -- extreme nationalists?Confused

Errrr... What about blues music? And that lead into rock & roll - the U.S. is the home of both (and without rock & roll, and therefore blues, you wouldn't even have prog).

Almost all of the classic British proggers grew up as fans of American blues and r&b. And rock & roll!! I mean, the U.S. - Elvis, Little Richard, Bill Haley... you don't think the proggers were digging on that stuff when they were discovering rock music as kids?

Britain was the best for prog (late 60s into the 70s) but it all stems from American blues and rock & roll.

I agree with Peter... USA is a kind of summary of all Western Civilization, with the great, the good, the average, the bad and the ugly.

But it's also correct to say that many genres created there had great development in other parts of the world, like rock.

But in the other hand, many genres created outside USA got a great development there, like Brazilian bossa nova.

Not one person has mentioned an Australian band in this thread. And I can't name an Aussie prog band. So someone has sabotaged this poll!
