No racism allowed... For me it's gotta be Britain, because unless I'm wrong they did practically invent Prog Rock...

Also, I only did places that i knew had Prog Rock bands, do mention if there are any more major ones ( plus I'm sure everywhere has their fair share of Prog Rock bands).

Have you ever heard of The Netherlands? Focus (!), Supersister, Kayak, Earth and Fire, Ayreon, Gathering, Finch, Alquin, Ekseption ......

Still voting for Britain of course. Even if we leave out the prog, and focus on rock, Britain stands out for me.

New Zealand, Romania, and Portugal over Netherlands, Finland, Belgium etc...

I'm torn between Britain and Canada at the moment. Since Britain is going to get most of the votes naturally, I'll vote for Canada!!!

Averaged over 35 years it'll be Britain and the poll is rather useless. At the moment it's clearly Sweden
for me with at least 3 good bands active at the moment. So i voted Sweden.

The United States is most consistent. While the country may not be the best in one particular genre, the country has stood firm to doing every subgenre in progressive rock there is. Except for that Italian stuff, of course. If you want to pick a certain decade and ask which country is the best, for the 1960's/70's I'd most definitely go with Britain. And for today I'd probably vote Sweden. But these two countries are inconsistent.

I consider this a joke ( a bad joke, actually)

Gb off, I vote for Italy, but Germany it's a lovely second option. But Britannia is THE home of great rock (including prog rock, of course). Amercinans created, they pushed to the limits.

Germany. Krautrock was the most experimental music of all; only some RIO can perhaps rival it. and nothing is as trippy as Krautrock

I consider this your ignorance's fault to what the United States has offered musically.

I agree with BaldJean, Germany probably made the most music that could be considered Prog, with England, Italy and France trailing.

I'm a bit puzzled by this statement Ryan. Kansas was a good band in the 70's. At the moment there
are a lot of popular prog bands from US:
Spock's Beard, Echolyn, Dream theater, Dredge,Glass Hammer,TMV  to name a few(there are more).
I haven't heard  TMV yet but i like all the others in the order that i've listed them. A vote for US at the moment would certainly not be ridiculous.

But in the 80's and 90's the situation was rather dismal wasn't it? Do you have some examples from these decades?

I guess I'll go with Sweden.

Pain Of Salvation, Opeth, Therion, Andromeda and Evergrey is a pretty good bunch.

The 80's is a decade I try to stay away from alltogether when it comes to rock (that includes prog). But if you check where prog metal began, it's America. Queensryche and Fates Warning began in the 80's. Personally I'm not really into that type of stuff, but for those who enjoy prog metal I don't know how they could dismiss America. Dream Theater had their debut in 89' as well, who the typical prog-metal band these days rips off of. The 90's includes a few of the bands you mentioned already, most notably Spock's Beard and Echolyn, Echolyn continues even today to create original music.

Other 80's/90's groups: Salem Hill, Symphony X, Kevin Gilbert (The man who was up to auditioning for Genesis), Tool, Frank Zappa in the 80's, and Shadow Gallery. These just came to me off the top of my head, there's much much more to be listened to, especially in the 00's but that's another story.

I hate the 80's so much

Oh yeah, one last thing. The United States gave the world jazz. Where do you think Jazz/Fusion came from? It's just a bunch of British interpretations (they are excellent no doubt), but the sound is/was impossible to create without the southern/midwestern American culture through the 1900's. That may not be "best bands", but the idea is significant nevertheless.

^Yes you're right I forgot Zappa in the 80's and i hadn't realized that bands like Salem Hill and Dream theater have been active for so long already.

Zappa: You are what you is, what a witty album that is great sense of humor this guy.

the French made the best Progressive Fusion in the 70-80's by a long shot, not the English Canterbury scene!

Countries that contributed the most to the development of progressive music, IMHO:

  1. Britain
  2. Germany
  3. U.S.
  4. Italy

My personal taste though:

  1. Britain
  2. Italy
  3. Netherlands

Sorry but my vote goes to Magna Britannia, we do/done the best prog becuase like heavy rock and heavy metal we invented it! I must say though that the USA comes a very close second as they do do the better prog-metal bands (with the exception of Threshold who will always top my prog-metal poll simply becuase they are English!).

But we cannot forget the Netherlands, and the scandanvian nations when ti comes to prog-rock an prog-metal as well.

just to make a comment on the question...

Is Britain a nation? I don't think so...

As far as I know there are three nationalities on the island

English, Scots and Welsh... of course a Brit knows more about this
- so in your question probably Britain should be replaced by England I guess - no offence

then I would say England

Errrr... What about blues music? And that lead into rock & roll - the U.S. is the home of both (and without rock & roll, and therefore blues, you wouldn't even have prog).

Almost all of the classic British proggers grew up as fans of American blues and r&b. And rock & roll!! I mean, the U.S. - Elvis, Little Richard, Bill Haley... you don't think the proggers were digging on that stuff when they were discovering rock music as kids?

Britain was the best for prog (late 60s into the 70s) but it all stems from American blues and rock & roll.

I agree with Peter... USA is a kind of summary of all Western Civilization, with the great, the good, the average, the bad and the ugly.

But it's also correct to say that many genres created there had great development in other parts of the world, like rock.

But in the other hand, many genres created outside USA got a great development there, like Brazilian bossa nova.
